Washington, DC, Mar. 18 (UPI) -- For the 11th year, the University of California was the school that received the most patents in 2004, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said. "The development and commercialization of technology are essential to a strong economy," said Jon Dudas, undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and director of the USPTO. Of the top 10 patent-receiving universities,
- the University of California received 424 patents,
- followed by the California Institute of Technology with 135,
- the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 132,
- the University of Texas with 101,
- Johns Hopkins University with 94;
- Stanford with 75,
- University of Michigan with 67,
- University of Wisconsin with 64,
- University of Illinois with 58 and
- Columbia University with 52.
