Primary Education

Great Schools in Wisconsin
Wisconsin loves its K-12 education system and we consider the quality of primary education among our greatest attributes. It’s no wonder that other state and national educators applaud our success, and business leaders are attracted by the quality of our workforce.

How We Got Started
Wisconsin's first public school opened its doors in 1845. Today, Wisconsin is divided into approximately 426 public school districts, each governed by an elected board. Wisconsin's public schools serve nearly 880,000 students. Private elementary and secondary schools enroll about 148,000 students, and another 21,000 are home schooled.

School Directories
The Wisconsin Public School District Directory contains basic information from each of the state's public school districts and 2R Charter Schools. Information includes district name, superintendent, address, phone numbers and fax numbers. Click here to access the public directory.

The Wisconsin Private School Directory contains basic information from each of the state's private and tribal schools. Information includes school name, school administrator, address, phone and fax numbers. When there is a post office box and street address, both addresses are given separated by a blank line. This data is updated annually in October. Click here to access the private directory.
